At the time, there was some discussion whether these marks were factory applied (hence ALL restored carriers should have them) or if they were applied some time later. I sense they are a post-war thing. But, back to your question, if your stencil is a 'stowage' marking, knowing what should be at that location may shed some light.
My carrier had all the stowage places stencilled and it was definitly not done post war. John
