I'm quite sure that sometime in the past the free length of carrier springs have been posted, I can't locate the post.
Ben has been kind enough to supply me with a comparison photo between UC front/rear outer against a couple of the inner types. The Loyd TT parts book states: Outer - TL332 Inner - TL1386 ![]() ![]() Inner Does anyone have a period indication of the number or coils and free lengths of either of these? As you can see the Loyd that I'm stripping has inner and outer springs of the same length, both are 9.5". Obviously having been compressed for 70 years, 50 of them corroding on a range they may have taken on a set ![]()

Alastair, the inners for your loyd are quite a bit longer, and of a smaller dia. wire. i have them at home, but will not have access for a year.
Andrew Rowe may be able to help. Send him a p.m incase he misses this thread. The front outer of a U.C is 10.5 coils, 10.22 to 10.42" long. the rear bogie outers are 9.75 coils, 9.4 to 9.6" long. The U.C inners are 13.25 coils, 9.09 to 9.19" long. (front and rear) The rest of the suspension components are interchangeable.(cups, balls, rods, spacers) Sorry about spelling your name wrong before.

TL332 is the same as the Outer spring on Front bogie of a Universal carrier. The other number does not match up though. Hope this is of help.

Alastair, I was having a brain fade. The Loyd outers are longer and lighter than the U.C. I Imagine the Loyd would ride like a brick on U.C springs. Richards post reminded me.
Again, talk to Andrew.

I was just sorting Loyd springs the other day. As I believe, the inners and outers are the same length, which is about 11 inches and are of a thinner gauge wire to other carriers. I will check length tomorrow.
The Local pattern carriers match an outer and an inner of different lengths, and also depending on what wheel station they go on. I think this goes the same for UC's.

Thanks to all.
However I should point out that according to the parts book Loyds have different springs depending on application. The number I quoted was for the TT, there are differnet numbers depending on version..... TPC All Bogies: TL332 - Outer (std UC front Bogie type) TL331 - Inner (?) TT All Bogies: TL332 - Outer (std UC front Bogie type) TL1386 - Inner (Bren/Cav Carrier front Bogie type - Ref BenH) TS&C Front Bogie: TL114 - Outer (?) TL1386 - Inner (Bren/Cav Carrier front Bogie type - Ref BenH) TS&C Rear Bogie: TL332 - Outer (std UC front bogie type) TL1386 - Inner (Bren/Cav Carrier front Bogie type - Ref BenH) If the outer TL331 is the standard front bogie UC inner spring it would make sense that the TPC used these as it has additional armour making it heavier than a TT. I presume the TS&C had a weight imbalance issue due to all the extra equipment. I don't have 100% faith in my Loyd measurements as in 20 years post war service any version of bogie spring may have been fitted, to keep them running.

Looking a the British universal carrier manual, the outer spring on front bogie is as above, TL332, the standards are quoted as follows; "if the springs are badly rusted or reduced in length by more than 1/16" below the following standard, they should be renewed. Front outer spring 10 1/2 coils , 10.22 to 10.44 inches long"

The early British parts book lists....
Front bogie outer TL332 all types. MG carrier,Bren, cavalry, scout,UC mk1, AOP mk1&2. Front bogie inner TL331 all types, as above. Rear bogie outer TL126 all types, as above. Rear bogie inner TL1386 early carriers, MG carrier,Bren, cavalry, scout, AOP mk1. Rear bogie inner TL331 UC mk1, AOP mk2 The picture below shows the four types as removed from the Scout. L to R. 332,126,331,1386. The longer, thinner, rear inner was new to me until I stripped the units but confirmed by the parts book. Unfortunately it doesn't mention the Loyd specifically but the part numbers tally. I can provide an original to copy if needed. Ben |
