On 29 June I'll be doing a layover in Amsterdam for about 5 hours. I've been told that the airport is interesting - But what else is there to do?

Charlie:

Take a cab from Central Station (no tipping allowed) to the Krasnapolski Hotel.

Very near there is the Anne Frank house.

The canals are also very near. You might want to go "window shopping".

The live sex shops/shows run 24/7.

Beer is cheap and frothy. The bartender paddles it for you.

Harlotry ,while a noble endeavor,is way down near the bottom of the tours available from the Canal Street area..The boat tour is spectacular and there will be some kind of military tour available from some where in the area..

Heiniken is military 'eh...??
Back in '70 in Sardinia I personally was in charge of keeping the the Iron Doctor(beer machine) full and serviced..at 100 lira..016 US at the time Heiniken was the number one seller..so there is definitely a military slant in our postings..

Hanno, you know Amsterdam is like a resort...for tourists only (oh yes....and I work there)


Charlie, meeting up with a fellow MLU-er would have been fun, but I am on holiday in France on that date, so I have to pass as well.

Amsterdam is big enough to spend a few hours (and lots to see). Schiphol airport is also quite big, but 5 hours there seems a lot!
You could also take the train or quick bus (Zuidtangent) from Schiphol to Haarlem, my original hometown. Nice historic centre, smaller and more relaxt than Amsterdam if you ask me.

CMP related than I would have to say... LWD parts. I can't speak for Dirk and Stefan, but there is lot's to see there. You probably need a rental car to get there, though.

Whatever you do. have fun here in our small country!

If I've got it right, when Schiphol Airport was being enlarged some years ago it involved draining and reclaiming land. During the work the remains of several WW2 aircraft wrecks were recovered.

Would there be a display somewhere nearby of some of the artefacts?

I know that this kind of wreck recovery is not all that unusual in Holland so maybe no big deal and the stuff just taken away.

Hundreds of planes crashed on Dutch soil during WW2. There are two groups nearby that focus on WW2 aircraft recovery and recently they decided to join hands. Both are in the Schiphol region and both could be visited with a rental car.

There are probably more groups in the country and museums that display crashed aircraft, including "Deelen reserach group" and Aviodrome in Lelystad.

Apart from the museums Alex mentioned, in another thread I suggested a visit to the Den Hartogh Ford Museum at Hillegom. That's a 20 to 30 min. drive from Schiphol, and you could even take the bus. While there are no military vehicles on display, it is a great place to visit if you have a couple of hours to spend.
