Easy does it Ed. There are dark forces at work. Those Iltis guys will lure you and your spare time to their evil purposes. They may be smiling on the outside, but take my word for it, you don't "need" an Iltis. For the sake of all things proper, pusser and Chimo, invest in an M-series vehicle as a preventative measure.

Amongst the MLU guys, I know of a 5-ton wrecker for sale. You will be the Terror of Farr Haven as you tool around the cul-de-sacs honking the air horns, crushing Toyota Pious hybrid cars, and polluting the biosphere with black particulate exhaust - worse than a thousand simultaneous backyard BBQs.

Great advice Terry, but no worries, I have no intention of investing in an MV.

Ha! "Investing" in an Iltis is akin to investing in Bre-X!

...says the Iltis owner.

Stuart,

Was that a shot at me for trucking vehicles up?

I truck vehicles around to lessen road miles and to speed the process up.

Bear in mind what you see me bring for the most part does not belong to me but for the collection for whom I work . There are order to follow ya know.

I have however purchased an MV recently and Santa brought me a trailer, so look out!

I put a request in quite some time ago to join the forum. How long does it usually take to get a response?

Default The pariah of the CF

It is no secret that the Iltis is regarded as the pariah of the Canadian Forces military vehicle fleet. Or, is that just because the LSVW hasn't ( and probably never will be ) released into public ownership.I think Stuart is saying that some Iltis have been restored as a tribute to a vehicle that served for many years and in war zones. Love it or hate it, is it not worthy of that respect. Yeah, yeah, I know it wasn't designed for the job, some body else picked it and you got stuck with it!
Remember the Sherman is a great icon and was referred to as a Tommy Cooker and a Ronson, and who wouldn't want one of those?
I have restored several Iltis and this is the one I did for myself. Yes they can be rust buckets, a NOS body certainly eliminates that problem.

There is no comparison between the Iltis and the LSVW...now there is a lemon so rotten you can't even make lemon aid. Compared to an LSVW, an Iltis is a rolls royce.

Yes Stuart..many thanks for help on what was a pretty miserable day. Still the Iltii all seemed to run very well thank you on the trip down and back.--at a very reasonable speed..fie on the iltii naysayers....

I hope they repeat that event in Kingston..in spite of predicted rain..which was accurate.. a pretty good turnout of vehicles and a couple of interesting collections..although tourists were kept away sadly...

now if I could just get a nice antenna.....

Granted, I haven't attended an HMV or other auto event since the fall of 2012, I still managed to put over 1000 miles on my M151A2 driving here in the NCR between May and Oct this year.
My M151 is akin to another mans motorcycle, i.e. its my fair weather toy. If that happens to coincide with an event, great. If not, no harm to foul, as I still enjoy the hell out of it. I suspect many others roll like this as well.
As far as driving an HMV from city to city for an event... Will my M151A2 survive a road trip from Kingston to Ottawa, most definitely. Do I feel like subjecting myself to it? Not really. I've already got that t-shirt for driving MVs (Iltis included) all over this country (and others) in my day job I'll stick to sunny days driving along the Rideau Canal, or if i'm feeling crazy, Barrhaven to visit Spinnerhawken.

EDIT, as this memory just popped into my mind. A Reservist who volunteered to deploy with my Unit years ago once told me and a few others that "Remember, your job is my hobby". In a sense, this kind of applies here

Hello.

I haven't been a part of this forum for some time and a CGN member reminded me of MLU. The Iltisforum is no longer around. Didn't surprise me that it went, as participation was almost nil. I started it so that owners, Canadian mainly, could participate on more "modern" style forum, rather than a running Email thread. It was also nice having a Tapatalk accessible forum too. I guess I stepped on some influential Iltis toes!

I moved on to another MV and while members helped keep it running for one extension, I wasn't going to pay for it myself and no one could keep it up. The domain name iltisforum.com is available of anyone wants it.

Default Iltis woes- Let's remember

Hi all that will read this late post ,

Given , the Iltis is not such a great vehicle.

It is definetly underpowered and hard to get in and out of for a 6' 1' guy like me...

BUT, it is a representative artifact of the SERVICE of many, many of our fellow servicemen and women in often difficult and FORGOTTEN theatres of WAR...

Many lost their lives or health and are still losing their lives by suicide in those theatres of other people's wars .REMEMBER Yougoslavia, Croatia, Bosnia , Cyprus, Golan and Lebanon. REMEMBER the direct artillery hit on a UN Observation post in No Man's LAND BETWEEN Israel and Lebanon WHERE ONE OF OUR FINEST , a canadian major whose call-sign was '' Wolf '' got blown to pièces from a well placed artillery 155mm shell . His day to day driver during his carear was an Iltis ...

I bought an Iltis in REMEMBRANCE of guys like Wolf .

That is also why i am going to drive it to the local Cenotaph on Nov 11 and cry with the forgotten survivors of forgetten places and forgotten wars. Did i mention Rwanda, Haiti and Afhganistan ? Anyway, many are continuing to suffer from what they have seen from the point of view offered from the Iltis. Great visibility from that truck, indeed.....

We shall remember them.

Bob

Sorry boys. I love my Iltis. I like to show it as a tribute to all of the UN troops who have served Canada.

Right on Stuart !

Haiti and Afghanistan you are so very right.

Wolf got nice coverage in that well documented article in Legion magazine last year.

To visit his memorial you need special permission from the local authorities because it is in their lines in no man's land with the country next door. Fat chance we could get access with the situation now ?

That memorial would be i think the least visited canadian war memorial on planet earth. Flanders, France, Holland , Belgium ,Germany Italy, Hong Kong would all be quite easily accessible .

Why , tell me why the responsible country never apologised for bombing that UN post and killing Wolf ? Official Answer : Opponents were using the post as a shield for their operations. We hear that response even today in the current conflict when schools, hospitals etc. are targetted...

Right on Dan !

The aircraft you are standing in front of ( Buffalo ) is similar to the one blown to pieces with its canadian crew by the Syrians ( 1974 ) in another forgotten war the canadians were involved in...

Nice picture.

How was the airshow season this year ?

Default CC115 Buffalo

Please note that the aircraft is a CC115 Buffalo and it was on a UN mission when shot down by the Syrians on 9 August, 1974, and not by the Egyptians. All nine CF personnel on board were killed.

Default Iltis TM

Aside from our favorite Merrick Ville group, is there another site which has the download-able TM's for the ILTIS?

Or at least the correct TM # which I can go looking for. We have a new owner, who is driving my mechanic nuts.

When I had my conversion course, I had to return my Pubs and Pams.
Now that the horrid thing has been removed from service, I still get asked about it. Yes, I was issued several, but it was a long time ago.

I always hated that politically motivated machine, but I'm trying to help a really good friend.

Default militarytrucks.ca

militarytrucks.ca is a great site for canadian military publications.

Free and available TM's for collectors and restorers alike.
