Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the entry ticket to this group. I would like to share with you some pictures and info re CMPs in Israel. As the British Mandate neared its end, in early 1948, the army was quick to dispose of many (my estimate -a few hundred) CMPs of all sorts. These were to form a major pillar in the young and poor country's transportation arena over the next decade. A few examples - the first picture (upper left) was taken in the Northern city of Haifa, presumably in 1947. It still bears the military insignia, which I cannot decipher. And then, one year later, we have the same body (same car? who knows) re-surfacing as an Israel Police vehicle: The army had all sorts of CMPs: #10265 is mobile canteen, as is #2645 (on a late model), while #28040 and #28071 may be artillery tractors. This last picture was taken in 1952, as the vehicles went for an overhaul at the "Magen Chatwood" plant in Petah Tikva. More pictures on the following post - |

Here's a disposal list notice from March 1948. Some CMPs are included as well.
Then, three civilian CMPs: - a fire brigade water tanker (the picture dates from 1958-59), - a recovery vehicle - a box van that was used by Osem, a local pasta producer (the picture was taken before 1957). Last but not least is a poor-quality picture I took in 2009. Here's what the ID plate said: Model 4x8443 Chassis# 4-8443-07326 Engine# PR4018717 Contract SM-2921 Date 11-6-1945 IND As far as I can tell, this is a Chevrolet C60L, Holmes breakdown wrecker, assembled in India. Thanks! Here's a close-up at this ambulance, a 1949 picture taken in Abu Ghosh (on the way to Jerusalem).

What have they used for a front axle under the ambulance? I have never seen a 2 wheel drive blitz before.

Rick that is a F602L, a factory built 4x2 chassis.
Yohay, thank you very much for sharing this interesting aspect of CMP use and disposal!

There were 4X2 versions of both the long and medium wheelbase versions according to the CMP 'bible' by Bart Vanderveen. Don't know about numbers produced though.
You should have a copy of this book in your reference library!

It looks as if the 4wd hub and axle ends are still used but with a straight tube.
