The owner told me that his father fitted this carrier with a two man tank gear box that came into Australia after the war from New Guinea anyone have any ideas ?

Default OIL cooler

Notice the small oil cooler, and the piece of railway line on the front, also you maybe able to see the cleats welded to the track to give it better traction

Default Buggered If I Know

Ron, it looks as you described it, the transmission , chaind & reduction boxes are unknown to me, looks similar to a Stuart g/box, both cover & location of the levers but I don't know if the chains suit. Bizzare machine indeed...

Default Gearbox

I could be wrong, but if it's from a two man light tank it could be from a Marmon-Herrington. A few found their way to Aust during the war and used as training vehicles. Eventually they were all scrapped for parts. Mate, if it is from a M-H, there wouldn't be many around...........
