I just thought I would ask to see what photos are out there and maybe find one of my M38A1 jeep in service CFR 67-07894. I guess that would be the holy grail for any military vehicle owner. Are there any folks out there that have photos of their projects in military service?

Holy Grail?
I have heard of two guys here in Aus. who have ended up owning the vehicles they served in. A nice trick if you can manage it. Good luck with your search. Rich

Where are you? There is a clutch of M38A1 owners in Ottawa (myself, Clive, Eric Blair, and two or three non-members). Clive has researched the CF vehicle registration numbers, serial numbers and plenty of other important information. He has not yet published it, but we are all hopefully waiting. There is a small book on Jeeps in Canada written by a PhD historian at the War Museum and published by Clive. It is not as illuminating as hoped for, but buy it nonetheless to support publishing.
As for your CF, there are fellows who will run the number through the current maintenance database. I got other parts of the same information from a $5 Access to Information request to the gub'mint. Getting to your original question, once you know the unit you have another research task. Good luck.

If you take a look at http://www.ramtank.ca you will see that I have set up a 'registry' of Rams, Sextons, Grizzlies, etc... With the info I got from DND I will try to do the same for M-series vehicles. As with the Ram, I will post every photo possible, especially those that show the CFR. I may not include 2 1/2 tons and some others but will try to include the small stuff (M38, M38A1, M37, M151 and their variants). I am dependant on MLU Sunray for hosting this as he has given me a discounted price due to the low band-width I use but if traffic is too great then I may have to go elsewhere.
The M38A1 booklet, as with all of the Weapons of War titles, is not aimed at the knowledgeable 1:1 scale milveh enthusiast but rather for the museum visitor, modeller and the occasional interested vet. However, you may find some new info in there.

I guess one has to consider the small size of our military acquisitions in the first place. If there was even one book printed for every M38 and M38A1 sold by Canada, it would only amount to a couple thousand. Hardly the sales potential to justify the publishing of a weighty hardcover tome. I think that the best any collector of Cdn miitaria can hope for (generally) is perhaps a chapter or two in books on subjects encompassing more than just Canada. Old Lithgow: I will try and remember to look up some of the history on your jeep tomorrow. It should lead you to the unit that held it. Often they will have regimental museums or photo collections you can browse through to find your particular vehicle. |

However, even in their small size they each run between 6,000 and 6,500 words of original, researched, text and 20-22 photos, many of which have not been previously published. I do have plans to publish a big book on Canadian jeeps, as well as one on softskins and a big book on the Ram. Hopefully one (or all) of these will keep you busy on those winter nights when it is just too cold to go and cuddle with your milveh.

As always, I look forward to more offerings from servicepub.
I managed to pick up the pub on the armoured train while I was at the CWM a few weeks ago. I gave it a second read last night. There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of various military vehicles and aircraft in this camp, but those little Canadian pamphlets are more interesting. |

My nine months finish next week and I return to Canada in time for Winter (talk about lousy planning!)
Upon my return I will be sending the following four WOW titles to the printers; the Ferret, the 17-pdr, Early Armour and the 3/4 ton SMP. So pay off your credit cards and be prepared to order. Soon after I will be printing a 200-page book on the First Special Service Force and I hope to get my motorcycle book finished.

I was in KAF in July and DND is using some pretty nice kit. The old SMPs and CMPs were nice, but in 30 years people will be posting requests for images of G Wagons and LAVs.
I don't miss the stench of the poo pond though. |

Your return to the Hammond Barn is anticipated with some vigour. We await tales of derring-do and perhaps a voo-doo demonstration. On the practical side, there is some maintenance that needs to be done to your shelter - you could use a floor (buy a tarp) and the shelter fabric needs to be replaced or tarped (get two 12X20 or larger tarps). Take care.

Hope to see you soon Clive.....
Roof tarp for the shelter needs to be minimum.......24 feet (critical for length of shelter) x 20 to 30 feet to reach from side/roof/side and some cheap yellow 1/4 inch rope.....100 feet minimum.... See you soon. Boob
