| ANZAC Day

The BBC news reminded me last night that today was ANZAC Day. I asked the "veterans" of my European history course if they remembred what today was -- and some of them did! I googled ANZAC and came up with this quote from the last Australian survivor, Tom Matthews: "If youve got a good enough reason to live, you just don't die." He got to 100; I guess his reasons were good enough. You lot Down Under, raise at least one Tooey's or Castlemaynes in their memory for me. Bob Potter |

The last surviving veteran from the Galipoli campaign was Alec Campbell, who died at the age of 103 in 2002. See http://www.anzacs.org/campbell.html for more info.

| Thanks, Tony

The wording on the article was confusing. It sounded like Tom Matthews was the last surviving ANZAC who landed on the first day. I did see an article on Campbell while I was searching. Still, the memory must be maintained. Some of us fight the fight in the classroom. It would be easier if parents fought alongisde us. Bob Potter |
