Hello everybody.
I don't know if anybody will know(but from having read this forum for a good while, I think somebody will), but I'm after some technical information and history about these charging sets please (is an online source asking too much?). I got one with a slightly damaged spark plug and bent frame and want to get it back in shape. Cheers. |

Are you referring to the chorehorse charging set mfg by Johnson? WW2 vintage? If so, contact me by PM, may have a manual for you.

If what you're referring to is the Generator Set, Gasoline Engine, PU-5008/U (Modified Johnson Model CHI-395-6), I, too, may be able to help.
This little beauty, 300 W, 30 V, 10 A, runs like a dream when it's properly maintained. Was used in the Canadian Forces to charge a bank of 80 AHC batteries whilst another bank was on duty running communication equipment in the field. As far as sorting out the bent frame is concerned, you're on your own. Apply sweat and tears to metal...no blood, please...doesn't look good mixed with the grease. I have a spare NOS spark(ing) plug, however, you are over there, and I am over here.

I've just double checked and it said "Charging set 300W Mk1, mod no CH1-395-5" it's 15V 20A output and made by "Outboard Marine and manufacturing company of Canada"(is this Johnson?).
It should straighten out quiet nicely with a bit of heat, and as for the spark plug, it's another thing to add to my Beltring list. Thanks for the advice. |

Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) was contracted to purpose build these modified generators originally made by Johnson.

Expensive, but, as an Australian copy holder said..."Worth every Pommy pound". Speaking of Clansman, see next separate post.

Yep-got that.
It is THE book to have(vol's 1-3) It just makes me want to buy more and more gear. The only thing it hasn't got is nice colour pictures, but I think they would spoil the look of it anyway. (and it shows the canadian charging set's, but there the only thing in there without all the facts and history) |
