CMP tool box information

Just noticed this on an e-PAY store and thought it interesting and unusual.

This is New Old Stock and in mint condition

It is a reel of steel wire from the toolbox of a Ford Canadian Military Pattern Vehicle from 1941 the perfect addition to your tools

Original CMP tool box, will need a fresh coat of paint. Complete with inside tray that is usually missing. Has "Dominion Department of Labour" Tag attached. Please see pics. Box is in good condition and a great addition to store those equally rare tools in.

Can I ask you if you can take some overall measurements of the box and post them here? I have never seen a genuine toolbox at this end of the pond....or maybe I did, but just didn't recognize it . A few measurements would help my search for one.

Here is some info for the cmp toolbox:
lenght is 16 1/2" (419 mm), 6 1/2" (165 mm) large and the height is 7"
(180 mm) handle not included.

I have a tool box at work that is identical to that, was his tool box after he came home from the war... Also a lot of his tools that i believe he may have brought home with him.

Is that small tray welded into place? or can it be taken out?

The small tray is spot welded on the front and the rear toolbox panel and
cannot be removed.

Evening all,

Found this today and suspected it was a CMP toolbox, but had not seen one for real. Took a chance and bought it (full of very old plumbing kit).

When I've got it home and emptied out all the contents the 1945 Christmas card was wrapped up in the cloth.

Was going to ask for advice on whether this was a genuine article, but from looking at the photos on this thread I think my hunch was correct. It will need a good clean and partial repaint.

Your hunch was nearly correct: as it says Ford on the side and therefore has a locking tab for the more valuable tools & spares.
As you have a Chev you need to exchange it with my toolbox so the proper toolbox is in the proper truck.

Nice catch John! Indeed a nice CMP toolbox. Maurice was able to help me with half a toolbox and I now have Hanno's box here to copy the lid and handle.
I did make a lid a few weeks ago, but sadly I made it slightly too small....it works, but I am sure that after some paint and after fitting the hinges and lock with rivets, it won't.

I thought because it was for a Ford, it had seen so much repeated use that the catch had broken and a replacement locking hasp had been fitted........

I've cleaned up the toolbox I found in a junk-shop and posted photos earlier in this thread.
There are no obvious manufacturer's markings on this box to help with identification. I guess that is the same for all CMP boxes?

But once all the paint was taken off, there is a tiny stamp on each hInge stating "Stanley CANADA". This might be useful for anyone else looking to confirm Canadian manufacture of similar boxes

The Pedlar People Ltd. of Oshawa Ontario made (at least some of) the CMP toolboxes. Peter Ford's INFOEX listed Pedlar as making 40-mm & 4" cartridge cases. I believe they also made radiator screens and hood (bonnet) openings for the 13 cab CMP Chevs.

Here is a photo (courtesy of Colin McGregor Stevens) of all the tools a CMP was kitted out with. On the lower left corner one can see the tool box.

Who has a better quality scan of this picture so we can properly identify all the tools and kit?

Maybe this thread can grow in scope to include information on all of the kit on this photo?

The photo of all the tools (Colin M Stevens) can be found on "The Factory Photos" CD from Clive Law's Service Publications. See #s 220, 350 and 1053.

I've found another Canadian toolbox in Sussex. Identical to the one found earlier this year and again has "Stanley Canada" hinges. On Ebay this time, just listed as a "old metal toolbox".

As before the clasp wire was missing, but it had again been fitted with a hasp instead (gas welded this time rather than riveted).

Either the original clasps were a weak point and the wires failed, or they were deliberately removed when the lockable hasp was fitted.

Seems quite a coincidence to find two, but as there were Canadian forces stationed all along this part of the south coast, perhaps these toolboxes were left behind?

Hasp removed and cleaned up ready for painting.

They could very well have been sold off following the end of hostilities as there was a vast quantity of surplus Canadian war materiel in the UK and mainland Europe.

We have had this discussion before regarding ammo boxes, but I am presuming the toolboxes followed the same base paint colour as vehicles.....Khaki Green G3 early war, SCC2 Brown mid war, SCC15 late war?
Any thoughts?

I'm collecting a standard issue CMP vehicle toolbox when I visit Ontario in November. I'll need to fit it into my checked luggage to bring it home.

Could an MLU member please provide me with the external dimensions? That way I can take a suitcase large enough, but not tooo large, with me for the trip.
