Many of the nicknames are actually job titles; Buffer, Nav, Guns, etc.

In the Aussie services, many surnames almost automatically receive certain nicknames, often with no relation to the type of person. Some examples I've heard often are:

"Swampy" Marsh
"Dutchy" Holland
"Nobby" Clarke
"Spider" Webb
"Bomber" Harris
"Squizzy" Taylor (and Tailor)
"Uncle" Roberts (or full title "Yer Uncle")

Of course, there's a Spider and Bomber in the show, so we can guess what thier surnames are!

Funniest nickname I ever heard was "50 Cal" or just Fifty. Was he a machine gunner? Was his name Browning? Was he shot up? No, his name was R Finch. Think about it.
