Default Submarine ID

I had an uncle who served in the RCN during WW2 as a Wireless Officer. We know he served on HMCS Agassiz and HMCS Timmons. My cousin recently ran across a photo album he had put together during his service. A couple of interesting photos attached.

I am curious about the submarine seen through a porthole. Can anyone identify the type/nationality of the vessel? Seems odd there is nobody visible on deck.

David
