Default Colour Patches WW2

Hi,

Can anyone give me details of the patches worn by Canadian servicemen during WW2? I was reading a war diary today for the Dundas, Stormont and Glengarry Highlanders which stated they were part of the 3rd Div and were issued with a Grey Patch. So how exactly how did the colour patch work, a different colour for each Div regardless of the regiment or was there another colour added to the patch to denote the regiment?

Hope the question is understandable.
