Intro: new F22 owner s/n CK-236140

Hi,

My name is Chris and I live in Sheffield England. I have recently purchased a very nice 1945 Ford F22. Until I saw this one advertised I had never heared of the F22. When I get chance I will post up some photo's. This is my first CMP so will probably have lots of questions.

At the moment the only markings on the truck are allied stars on each door. I would like to add the vehicle number to the doors as well, which prefix letter do I need ie;

Z for vehicles under 1 ton same as F15

H for artillery tractors or

L for lorry's over 1 ton.

Welcome to this forum! Did you buy this F22? If not, I am interested to hear of another survivor! Mind you, F22 is not an official designation - read more here.

Hi Chris,

Well, the jury is still out on that subject! One F22 owner told the editor of Wheels & Tracks his truck is a "late version of the standard 15-cwt 4x4 truck. It was fitted with 20" wheels to enable it to follow FATs and 3-ton trucks in their tracks. With their smaller 9-16" tyres the 15-cwts tended to get stuck, so they fitted larger wheels."

The former owner of CK-236140 / FSV327 states he found "blue and red on the metal work where the Divisional signs would have been. The Blue and Red indicated use within the Royal Artillery. No complete census number could be located, but there was a weak image of the letter "H" followed by either a 5 or a 3."

Even though "F.22" is stamped on the chassis rail, of course a Ford 22-cwt truck did not exist as the War Office had no 22-cwt truck class defined.

In my opinion this type of truck was assembled very late during or early after the war from remaining FAT chassis, possibly specifically for use with artillery units for use as 15-cwt GS trucks or auxiliary artillery tractors (?)

To complete the title Everybody who works on Ford Flat Heads should post this picture on the wall in the shop for it shows one of those fine design points that drives anybody who works on these engines crazy at some point. This being the mounting bolt hidden in the hose port.

Ford F22 CMP 1945
This truck is ready to drive away, fully serviced new battery fitted, electronic ignition and new coil.

Hiya,

It's about time I introduced myself as I've been perusing the forums for a couple of months - I'm Lauren and I bought Chris's CMP F22 (the one restored by Brian Nunn).

I've been into military vehicles for a while and actually drove a tank before learning to drive anything else (My first day driving motor vehicles was a team building day from work, driving a FV433 Abbott and T55). Yes, Tank Girl is my favourite film....

I'm also one of the volunteers at Duxford, helping to restore and keep the vehicle collection running, but "Dolly" is my first vehicle at home.

What an unusual truck

Do you know of the Morris Commercial CS8 the IWM had ? A very original example . I think Duxford had it at one time ?

I'll ask about the CS8 the next time I'm in. I've not had the opportunity to volunteer as much this year as work has taken priority, but I'm hoping the F22 will set me back into the MV hobby.

Exhibits do get moved around and some are on loan from other collections etc. Is this the one?

The F22 being unual is one of the main reasons I went for her (that and my partner losing her patience with me constantly umming and erring over which vehicle to get I'm looking forward to seeing if I can track down any more information on her.

Yes thats the CS8 I was asking about . I have been told it's pretty much unmolested, with the original woodwork in situ . A chap from Wales, Brian Cook, measured it up and supplied some drawings to me , for which I am eternally grateful. I thought it was a GS , but it may be something else. Wonder where it is now ? Hi Mike,

That Morris is an Air Compressor version, you can just see the top of it in the side shot. The top half of the side boards hinge down on these. I am sure this vehicle was on the show circuit once upon a time as the civvy registration number is familiar.

Here is a picture of yesteryear when Brian Nunn owned this F22:

"And here she is in the beginning, over forty years ago, after cutting down a tree (big sapling) which had grown between the chassis rails, and moving three or four cars which were blocking her in. The main reason for her still being there, her stable mate had just been sent for scrap. Just putting some air into the tyres, and prepping for the tow back home."

OK, still in the spot where was found, at least three vehicles had been moved to get to this point. The sapling is just visible, but others show it after it had been removed.

one Sunday morning, on Saracen recovery duty. Just tow an eleven ton 6x6 dead vehicle to an unsuspecting mate, cause he was the nearest.

Indeed,with 10.50-16 tyres, it seems. I asked Brian and he said: “That’s correct, the smaller wheels and tyres were fitted by the garage, to make it faster for the recovery works.”
