... is this a Blitz in the background? If yes, then its quite a rare pic. On the left side you see an open and closed cab GMC CCKW.

Hi Alex and Hanno

Thanks for your quick reply. I think the Swiss Army used the round canvas design so the rain or snow could easily just fall off by itself. If you look in this Swiss Blitz thread, all of them have the "round canvas design".

Hi Chis:

This may be "Urban Legend" but I have also read that the Swiss used the rounded canvas tops to be able to navigate the"Upside down "U" shaped" tunnels found on the roads in the Swiss Alps.

Based on photos I have seen of the tunnels, especially the smaller ones, that appeared to be one way traffic at a time, that made sense to me.

Bill

Is that a cab 11/12 lurking behind the "German Sherman" ? Got quite a ring to it....

"Catania, Sicily, Italy. c. July 1943. A German tank wrecked by the Eighth Army in their advance on Catania. Note also the smoke billowing from the front of a truck in the background."

Almost, but not quite, spot on Bill. I was told the standard size / height / roof profile is so that the trucks can be freighted through the RAIL tunnels in Switzerland. The road tunnels have clearance, but you'll find on a low bed flatcar the trucks all conform to the standard rail loading / clearance guage.
