Another old trick
...was to use an Australian threepence as a spacer in an emergency to give it more lift.

Keep in mind that adding, is only to compensate for wear. If you over do it, something will break.

Fuel Pump
I had a similar problem, turned out to have a hairline crack in the pump housing, enough to suck a gutfull of air.
