The chassis looks all the world to be a Guy Quad Ant.

The axles are indeed interesting, as with little experience with mecchano, the housings and halfshafts can be reconfigured to have the differential centred on the left or right of the chassis centreline. And although the differential pinions are missing (and spoil any grand plans), is that the speedo drive on the diff pinion housing, both F and R diffs? Break one, use the other?

In a previous thread I recall seeing an Italian 4X4 (can't remember the name but it was WWII for desert use) which looked as complicated as this (and was also found in Australia?). Just a thought.

Default Got it

Well done Graeme, Tony and Rick

Im convinced that it is a Guy Quad Ant.

Certainly the axle end in your picture Graeme, and the footage Keith has done of Stylesey driving his.

https://youtu.be/hMTFPB880dw

Have look at the end of the footage, looking at the outside of the Quad and Im sure the axles are a match.
