I've done a trial of the bolt head to bolt head welding but have no idea what, if any, metallurgical effects it may have had. The basic welding of one to the other wasn't hard - create the tapered groove, weld them and dress the weld down. This was only done to satisfy my curiosity as a trial to see if it was possible to make something of the right size and shape, not actually used to hold the head and filter in place.

I believe I'll be in need of two of these special ones as well.
Would turning down hex stock on a lathe be a suitable alternative?

|
Any machinist with decent knowledge of metallurgy should be able to ascertain the correct material requirements and hardening if any. After that, a simple CNC lathe program and voila.
Get someone to invest and make a run.
