Canada - a SUPERB silver Canadian Memorial Cross medal. Also known as a Mothers Cross. This example up for auction is the WW2 King George VI type. Awarded for Rifleman Andrew R. Smith, a member of the very famous Little Black Devils - the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. From Keewatin Ontario, Smith was probably part of the massive D-Day invasion in Normandy France, though it would need to be researched to find out what he actually took part in (the medal is being sold unresearched). He died on August 12, 1944 which could indicate he was killed during what has to be one of the most important battles of World War 2: the Closing of the Falais Gap, also known as the Chambois Pocket. Or, he may have died from wounds received earlier in the invasion itself, possibly even the D-Day landings? He was killed when he was only 22 years of age and is buried at BENY-SUR-MER Canadian War Cemetary, Reviers, France. The cross has a really neat little enamelled silver Black Devil sweetheart pin affixed to the front as can be seen in the photos. Unquestionably genuine, it is properly named on the reverse: H.20547 Rfn. A.R.SMITH . It is hallmarked and makermarked on the reverse: LACKIE STERLING with a large letter C. The cross was converted to a pin-back to wear as a brooch which was often done with these memorial medals. A rare opportunity for the Royal Winnipeg Rifle collector to purchase a RWR Canadian Memorial Cross! Shipping is $10 for registered mail.
