Default Cold One at the Barn

At the barn this morning, it was minus 5oC with a stiff wind. We got some very fluffy snow for a while until it warmed up. The sun actually made an appearance until noon when it clouded over.

The weather has changed, but the barn is as busy as ever. Grant worked on his engine, Bob was collecting waste oil for Lucifer, Guy dropped in for a chat, and I played with the HUP. We all took a break to restock the inside firewood crib next to Lucifer, and then got back to the business at hand.

I spent most of the morning working on the floor plates. I reattached the floor mounted handle (commonly referred to as the "Oh, J**** C***** bar"):

Bob was press ganged into doing some welding for me - we attached a fabbed up replacement clip on the floor plate (attachment point for one of the dog house hold down clips). No photos were taken (memory, the second thing to go...).

After a very expensive lunch at Mike's Place in Hammond, we got back at the fun and games. Bob and Grant spent some quality time adjusing the settings on Grant's engine head. I'm not sure what Bob is doing to that engine, but it seemed to help...

I ended the day trying to fit the fenders to the rear of the HUP and with a little help from my friends, finally figured out which fender went on the correct side...not as easy and one would think. We test fit the first fender, and Bob, ever the observant one, opined that maybe the frame had arched up causing it not to fit. Grant spotted the problem - the inside frame to which the fender attaches was warped. A few swings of a hammer later, on she went.

Here's what the fender looked like (from the rear - the front of the fender was racked and bent as well) when I bought the HUP:

Next week, I'll pull the fender off, install fender welt and some spray on undercoating. With the sun slowly setting, I made my way back to the home of the Three Stooges and the Grinch who stole Parliament from them...

Default What Is It?

Should be an easy one - what CMP part caused this outline? Bob, you have been disqualified...

Easy one - driver side floor plate. But in what year did the removable section over the brake master cylinder appear?

...I will disqualify all HUP owners. Phil, you are of course correct. The outline shows the radically different wheel cut out for the HUP when compared to (as Bob and Grant put it) a "real" CMP.

As for the removable section (HUP wise), I'll venture a guess - 1944. As for other "real" CMPs, I guess '42...

Rob,

Thanks for your updates. I always read this thread as it is very instructive.

Question: did you repair that mangled fender, or did you manage to buy new ones? I am wondering to what extent commercially available fenders and other fittings were used when the CMP was designed & built.

I was wondering if for example the single arch steel mudguards sold by Commercial Body Fittings (reportedly, this company comes highly recommended as they have all manner of old style fittings still available) could be made to fit?

I guy I used to know who restored a VW Typ 82 Kübelwagen told me he bought new front fenders for it. These were standard over-the-counter fenders which he only had to trim to make them fit.

Hanno,

When I first took on the HUP project, I tried to straighten out the sheet metal using all of my limited talent. Since cursing did not help, I took the HUP to a highly recommended "body man" to get the fenders hammered out and a new roof installed. After paying for the body man's new shop, I decided that all future work that I can possibly do, will be done by myself. It just got too expensive using the body man, even though he did a wonderful job of repairing the rear fenders.

The URL you sent is very interesting. I will measure my fenders next week and compare them to the thumbnail table.

I still need to replace or finish hammering out the front fenders as they were also in bad shape:

Hanno,

The HUP mudguard/fender rough measurements are:

Fender width (B): 15" 38.1 cm (not including the folded over edge)
Fender span (S) 44" 111.76 cm
Fender height(H) 23" 58.42 cm

I don't see a match on the chart in your posting above, but I am sure there are some "close enough" mudguards out there somewhere...

Default Quiet Time at the Barn

With the exception of a short but productive visit by Bob, I had the run of the barn today. Todays programme included floor plate painting and the conversion of a "real" CMP brush guard to a HUP brush guard. What's the difference? About one half inch if you are talking bumper size (HUP is 5" vice 5.5"), and one inch if you are talking bolt hole location. The "regular" CMP guard sort of fits the HUP bumper and the lower bumper mounting holes match up. The upper holes are one inch too high. So, the Hammond solution: drill new holes and fill the old with weld (enter Bob). The following sequence shows how we tackled this challenge:

Disassembled original.

Drilled for HUP bumper mounting.

Welded.

Ground down (and later dressed square with a hand file).

Mounted.

Default Bumper Comparison

Here is a shot of the HUP bumper in '02:

And a recent shot:

You will note some of the relief cuts and rewelds on the photos of the bumper in my previous posting. It took 10 cuts/rewelds and a good workout with a 100 ton press at Wright's Welding in North Gower to sort this pretzel out. It still cost less to reshape it than to buy a new bumper. Plus, it gives the HUP some "character"...

Default looking good

Hi Rob,

The HUP is looking good. I am going to have to plan a day in the new year to come out to the barn and have a look. I have the other two canvas pieces for you as well. Hope the familly is doing well.

Cheers,
Greg

Hello Greg,

It's been a long time. I hope to stop by North Gower for some metal work and then on Kars in the near future. I want to check out my Chev tipper, pick up the canvas, take a walk thru your goodies shed and to see the progress on your CMP. I think we will be moving the tipper to Hammond in the New Year, so we will have to discuss where you want me to leave the engine that is in the back of the truck. As well, I think a visit to some ex-pat Brits living nearby would be in order.

I'll bet the kids are growing like weeds. Hope to see you soon and will PM you to get your schedule for the next few weeks.

I still owe you the dimensions for the HUP "penthouse" tent (I hope you were not holding your breath...).
