Default End gate....tail gate stuff

Hi Bob and George,

I used 11 guage for the bent/broke pieces. I had a shop do the frame pieces and as George, I had them do just a couple of pieces and I cut them to size myself with a cutting wheel. Cost me $180.00 including material. Ouch...but...when ya gotta have it .... I copied a tailgate I located here in the city. It was attached to a 44 chev. I did make one mistake in the measurements...the tail gate is now 1"" thick as opposed to 3/4". "I should have measured twice and wrote once". I am not pissed about it, in fact one would not even notice it. The hinges I made from 1 1/2 cold rolled steel rod that was bored with a 5/8 hole which were welded to 1/4 flat bar. this was much easier than heating and bending them to form the loop. The skin is 14 guage. So far it has been very easy. I should be finished this afternoon and ready for paint.

cheers

Mike

Default cargo box and tail gate

Well Tim,you sure have accomplished some nice work, your truck looks real good, your a real pro with the sheet metal work.

Can I ask where you found the rear directional lights with arrows, I have only seen these once before on a 1941 Ford civilian body military 1.5 ton truck.

Default Thanks everyone.....

...appreciate your feedback.

Mike..... $180 for the tailgate is not a bad price..... did you ever price a repro Dodge Power wagon tail gate.....???

Keep in mind that I am working on an early 2B1 steel box for the cab 11.

Fortunately I do have a rsuted beat up one to copy. It seesm that all the early models had a lot more parts in the assembly.... whether it is the doors or the tailgate. I will take careful measurements and will post them for anyone else's future need. My old tailgate seems to be all 14 guage but will not more when I do some reverse engineering.

I like Mike's idea for the large hinges.... I will need quite a few as I have the drop sides.

I will mostlikely follow Georges' approach of getting the parts bent and cut my own lenght with the cut off wheel and/or the plasma cutter.

I just hope to be able to develop some kind of "rapport" with the guys at the fabricating shop so I can monitor what they are doing for us.

Will keep you posted.

Bob C.

The 6 Volt tail lights were from an old school bus or truck...they were fender mounted with a red lense on one side and an amber on the other. I painted the amber side and taped off the red side to form the arrow....I thought it looked better that just another set of red lights.

cheers
