Ran in to the former owner of the first f60l cab 12 i have ,and was talking about the old girl and mentioned he had been looking through some old slides he had found
He was kind enough to get them copied to photo form and send a copy to me
I think photos like these are great to see their previous use and a bit of their history

Default riveting experience

Andrew

When you have the time, can you tell us all how you went about the rivetting ??

What method you employed .. it looks very neat I must say. And, where did you obtain the rivets. Were they made locally by a friendly machinist ?

There is a chap that always has a stall at the Swapmeets around Sydney, and he frequently advertises in the restoration magazines:

The majority of the rivets i used were pre formed with a tapered head
The first one tony showed would have been better but i took the ones i could find
I made the longer 1/2 inch ones as i could not buy them
I used a block of cast (old tractor weight)drilled to the right depth and cut the rod to the depth plus about the diameter of the rod ,heat head only and peaned and mandrelled head to shape

I made up several different length backing bars with the head machined to take the shape of the rivet head
very important to have a tight ,solid backer when driving and forming the opposite head as any movement at all will result in a loose rivet caused by the flexing on the opposing side

I made up a forming bar using a jackhammer tip and machined the curve to suit the size rivet head you want to form. These have good hardened steel on the impact end

I found you get it into postion and wedge in solidly .
Then cut the rivet to length ,About 1/2 inch for 1/2 inch rivets and generally 1/2 inch for the 3/8 rivets as they seemed to need more to fill the voids on the initial strikes
Then begin heating the entire rivet as much as possible .Very important on the first hits as it allows the whole shank to swell into the cavities when driven
The first series of hits i drove directly on to the end until it filled the hole gaps might take several heating turns

Once this was done reheat and i formed a rough head with the ball pein of the hammer trying to get as uniform as possible . This cut down a lot of time doing the actual head forming cycles

Reheat then using the forming bar strike directly then slight circular motions to form a uniform curved head .This may take several reheatings till you get a uniform head pattern and a nice ,tight flat face against the metalwork you are trying to rivet together

I also made up a set of large clamping backing pliers to hold the rivets where I couldnt get a backing bar wedged in to
Even this needed some additional wedging to stop the strike vibration loosening the rivet head

Rest day today as the wrists ,elbows and eyes copped a smashing yesterday

Did a rivet count tonight. There is 17 on the c8 chassis and 52 on the c60l chassis
Also did a few experimental ones and stuffed up a few

Once set up with half a clue it Took about 8 hours to do 40 by myself

Reasonably happy with how they came out

Definately keep the number of the rivet guy Tony posted if any more come up

G'day Andrew see you've been busy lately.

I'm in the process of getting a F15 chassis ready to put a cab 12 on it.

I think I have all the parts I need from the chev cab 12 so if you are down this way we'll meet up sometime to see what bits you need.

Max

Would be great if you could run a half day workshop and charge a fee ... a few of us would be interested ... but distance is against us.

Again, well done on your innovative restoring skills.

I am definately no expert on the matter
Just a bit of trial and error
Wouldn't be worried about a fee
I would be glad to show anyone how i did it (right or wrong way)
Just let me know ,grab some rivets ,put your bits and oxy set in a trailer and come on up
Be glad to have a working bee in the shed and a bit of a bbq and maybe a few drinks as well
restoration is always better with a bit of company

Max -Sounds like a good project -Is it one to keep Howards company ?

Andrew,

Excellent work on the rivits...I just checked Youtube, but I haven't been able to find your DIY rivit video's yet

Both chassis' look great with a little paint on them. It's hard to judge the colours in the pictures, but I think the green looks pretty good, although maybe a little too light. I mixed and painted some colour samples according to Mike Starmers receipe a week or two ago and the green comes pretty close to yours, although a bit darker if I remember correctly.

Alex

A J The old hills hoist is good for small bits up to doors as you can give each one a hit as it comes around, one coat at a time, no mess , the grass looks greener too. Mum will never notice, ha ha.

Default new member of the family

The latest member to the family arrived today
Fits right in to the rare and rusty theme
A bit of variety being a Ford fgt no9
With a covert operation with the tilt tray driver managed ( SO FAR ) to slip it in undetected from cranky sentinel

Default Rare and Rusty

Sounds like a good name for a club or perhaps even a documentary.

Did you administer sleeping pills to the Sentinel?

How did you do it???????

No, wait - you can probably sell that secret for a lot of money.

Anyway congratulations on getting her home. I notice the crane has disappeared.

Recognised the old girl whilst looking through Keiths Old Cmp site

The old girl will not be exposed to the elements any more
Made a nice cosy hole in the shed for her
Funniest thing is that the sentinel actually helped me drive it into the shed
Definately a good thing when your wife just sees another rusty truck and dosent pay attention to details

Did you say drive? Does that mean you managed to get her running?

And I hope you have MLU password protected.
