Eric, Does the vehicle have a round hatch? If yes, then I believe it is part of the hatch cover retention "system".

Hey Phil, do you have a photo of your interior hatch arrangement? For that matter does anyone else have photos of the same? If so, please post them - I too am curious...

I don't have a picture that I can find (will keep looking) but as I remember, when I got my HUP it had a spring which was looped through the canvas straps that comes through the roof from around the cover. The spring was then attached through a bolt stuck through pair of the holes. The multiple holes allow for adjusting the tension. Cheers Phil
