hrm, unless this was answered somewhere else that i don't know about...
a hedgehog is the big steel THING in the first pictures. it was an obstacle on beaches, here used by the Germans along the Atlantic Wall. it prevents landing craft and tanks from moving to and over the beach. they were also placed further out so at high tide if a boat came over it would get damaged from below. watch Saving Private Ryan, they hide behind them at Omaha Beach.
