A 47-year-old man escaped injury when his car was in collision with a passenger train near Portage la Prairie Saturday night, RCMP said.

The collision between the car and the five-car passenger train occurred at a crossing on Highway 242, about five miles north of Highway 1, around 6:30 p.m.

The driver, the only occupant of the car, was able to get out of the vehicle on his own.

There were no injuries to passengers or crew from the train.

A 47-year-old man was charged with fail to obey rail crossing sign under the Highway Traffic Act.
