Non Military and Post war Land Rover question, so I will post here.
Came across this early Series I the other day, the pics do not really do it justice, it was as cute as a button. Can anyone hazard a guess to what year it is, there was no plate on it. 80 inch wheel base Single under screen vent Parking lights below vent at back of bonnet fixed seats originally the angled back to the doors (These have been modified to be vertical, the filler plate on the body looks so good it would be hard to believe it was not factory) Someone has treated this very well over the years, the colour is Camino Gold from the Series III era, Series II dash, nice swing away tyre carrier. Hard top fitted, but without the side or rear panels, for that natural Air Cond effect So what year?? Series one are not my strong point. Rich

Hello Richard,
I would say 49,or early 50. It has the fishplate chassis only fitted up to mid 50. wide transom rear tub only fitted up to mid 50 narrow springs all round,as above. Bulkhead side lights. A later series 1 instrument panel has been grafted in. the front grille panel and guards are also later series 1. If you open the bonnet and look straight down onto the lefthand engine mount (chassis) there should be a number.on this vehicle it will start with R866 or R061. Hope this helps Justin.

I would guess 1952 or younger
1949 through to around 1951 had the bull or headlights behind the grille .The later series 1 were mounted in the grille I used to own a 1950 model with the bull lights behind the grille I will try and find a picture soon and post

Thanks for the info guys, I will pass it on.
Cliff, thats a big can of worms in your hand, but I must admit that while owning Series II,III & a Defender over the years I have never been attracted to the Series I. So I find myself quite surprisingly impressed with this one, possibly because of the obvious attention and care that this vehicle has had over the years, generally think of them as being similar to Andrews old one, (not quite sure how that one escaped, as very little seems to LEAVE his yard.) Could be worse, we could be collecting stamps.... Rich

Hello Andrew,
With the LR having a fishplate chassis it is no later than 1950. As 51-52 models didnt have a fishplate chassis. And yes you are right it should have headlights behind the grille. but a later series 1 front has been fitted including the guards. the guards it has on it were never fitted on the 80" by the factory. regards Justin.
