Default M38A1/M151/Iltis Question

Can one of you with one of these handy please tell me the ground to pintle hook measurement, in inches please? Distance to the bottom of the "C" is fine...

Thanks,

Geoff

Default pintle hook heights

Geoff

Height to the bottom of inside curve of pintle hook :

M38 7:00x 16 military tires 20"

M38a1 7:00x 16 military tires 20"

Iltis 6:50 R16 C XZL tires 18"

Hope this helps.

Gord

Thanks Gord, it does. I had to reposition the pintle hook on my TJ and now it matches the 20" measurement. I'm getting a trailer sometime this winter and want it to ride in the proper attitude.

Funny the Iltis measurement is 2" shorter but I guess that's to accommodate the tyres on the Iltis trailer - I hadn't thought of that. My pintle hook was 16 1/2" in its old position but is now 20", so I can now take a trailer with 7.00x16s.

Now, just to find the right trailer for the right price...

Cheers,

Geoff

Just an afterthought... what's the measurement for the MB/GPW series of jeeps, and how much different are the WW2 trailers and the M100 trailers? I know the WW2 trailers wear 6.00x16 rubber, but aside from that, are their basic designs that much different?

Don't forget that the Iltis trailer has the two different heights of mounting for the lunnette.

The design changes from the WW2 trailer through to the M100, the M416, and even the M101Cdn2 were fairly minor. The stampings of the tubs were all very similar, with the variances being things like the top edge of the box, and the round vs angular fenders. The iltis trailer got a bit more radical in it's changes, but can still be made to look the part.

The Iltis trailer uses the same drawbar as the M416 trailers. There are two holes in which you can mount the lunnette. Works good for those lower jeeps like the M151A2. As I recall the drawbar components mostly used canadian NSNs, but were identical and even had the US ord numbers on the cast parts.

The Iltis trailer features a lot of reinforcing that was not seen on the previous trailers, especially in the corners and the solid barstock grab handles front and rear. They also had square tubing on the upper tub as opposed to the round tubing found on the earlier trailers. The sheet metal was basically the standard jeep trailer stamping. And of course the axle and springs were commercial items on the Iltis trailer. On the earlier trailers, they were based on the MB jeep suspension and hubs, although the M416 had some refinement.

If you get an Iltis trailer, you can replace the drum/hub with commercial ones which will have studs to the same pattern as your jeep. That way you will not have to carry a spare specifically for the trailer. It might also be possible to have someone with a lathe index and redrill/tap the holes on the existing drums to fit the jeep wheel.

The Iltis trailers are the most heavy duty of the trailers bilt in my opinion. I bought 28 of them a while back, and had no problem selling off 27 of them.

Interesting... I don't know nearly enough about trailers, having only towed one once, with my old M38A1. I want to find one in decent condition and at a decent price, to haul all my crap around to shows behind my camo TJ. I don't mind doing paint and rewiring, but major repairs are out of the question as I don't have anyplace to work on it. Pretty much any "jeep trailer" from WW2 to present will do, if it's intact. Fascinating stuff though, Rob, thanks! Reckon you CAN teach an old dog new tricks...

I'll measure my M151A2 when I get home.

I have a rough Unmolested but restorable M416 waiting for some spare time.
As Rob mentioned, aside from a few details it's close to an M100.
I have been debating buying rounded fenders for it to get the M100 look.
Only problem then is the hubs which are noticably different. That being said it's nice being able to run all the same tire wheel combination between the prime mover and trailer.

Another option with an Iltis trailer would be to swap in am M100 axle complete in order to get past that odd metric lug pattern. The 1/4 tons all have 5-5.5" lug patterns (except the iltis). Unfortunately your TJ will have 5-4.5" lug pattern, so if you wanted matching wheels it would require the machining Rob mentioned.

Naw, I wouldn't put the same wheels/tyres on it anyway, as I have deep dish 15" aluminium alloy wheels and 32" tyres. I'm not spending that kind of money on the trailer! 7.00x16 NDCCs will be fine for the limited use this will get.
