Can you sent me a picture from the plate I have a MK 1 for restoration so I'm looking for a lot of parts.

Brass versus Aluminium

You all may very well be correct that the originals were aluminium but its interesting that so few still exist. Could it be that as they are extremely thin, they haven't survived time and the elements?

If they were anodised like the data plates on the dash of "wheel-chocks", ( sorry read "Jeeps" ) and the aluminium surface was exposed it would be more critical that they be made from the original material; however, as the examples and descriptions given are all painted in carriers, would it not make more sense to make them from brass which has a higher tollerance to adverse conditions and is less affected by the electrolysis of dissimilar metals?

From an engineering perspective, if there are too many variations in the text that must be stamped onto the plates, your costs will once again rise. Your man is expecting quantity of the same plate, so that he can get his worker to mass produce. Changing wording on the stamping process takes time, writes in a factor of possible human error and will inevitably blow out expected costs. ( from experience ).

But saying all that, if the guys are prepared to wear the costs, there's nothing better than getting all of the little diamonds to finish your resto of perfectly. They are always the best bits - the little bits that are harder to find or make yourself.

from my experiences at work, unless they were put on with aluminium rivets its my guess that the rivets corrode the plate falls off and ultimately gets thrown away......or farmer joe or Lumber Jack whilst brutalising the carrier of its armour, throws it away.

another theory on rivets, if aluminium rivets are used in conjunction with the steel plate, over a long period the aluminium would react and oxidise eventually becoming brital, my example of this would be 99% french cars go look where the engine number plate should be, if your car is of any decent age i bet the plate has fallen off.

Default data plates

I have my CMP data plate and it looks like a galvanized plate.The magnet does not stick to it so there is no metal in it,but there is small corrosion in certain spots like aluminum does when it starts to corrode.The plate itself looks like tin.
I would be interested in putting the proper type of data plate back on my carrier as it will not experience the harsh elements to corrode it again that saw the demise of the original plate.It has a home now that will keep it safe!

The 1/2" square piece that is left on my MK2 is aluminum .It got ripped off over time but shows no sign of deterioration .The rivet has not hurt the aluminum . This plate should have . MODLE SERIAL ENGINE & CD LV , information on it size about 11/2 "x3 Above this On my MK2 there is a square plate 2"x7" with Ford and Canada below. The Instrument panel has UNIVERSAL CARRIER No2 MK11 below that is Manufactured by below that is Ford Motor Company of Canada
On the MK1 It has the first two plates mention above plus the instrument panel has a plate 7/8"x 3 5/8"Manufactured by below Ford Motor Company of Canada below is Windsor Ontario .There is another plate by the gages. 3/4"x6" ,Starting carburetor control, below that Push down when starting from cold below that Release as soon as possible .These plates seam to all be aluminum The plate that I will get first is the Identification plate behind the drivers head .Would anyone know of other plates ? .There is an oval one with FORD on it ,but not many of them .
