Might as well add this to your Jeeps background. Was checking on another CFR and figured you may want this. CFR# 1970-08624 Serial No. 99836 ECC (Equipment Classification Code) 121308 Truck, Utility, 1/4 Ton, 4x4, M38A1CDN3, Cable Laying Acquired Date 01 Jan 1970 Original UIC (Unit Identification Code) 0124 CFB Toronto (now dormant) VMO (Vehicle Movement Order) No. DP358797 08 Feb 1987 Disposal date 23 July 1987 Selling price $1403.00 Last holding notice 02 Feb 1988 Holding unit history says that it belonged to UIC 0106 CFB/ASU Valcartier from 01 Jan 1970 to 21 July 1983. Seems to be a discrepancy here for the 01 Jan 1970 date of original UIC and this Valcartier date? Work Order history shows only 2 visits of the 8 Correctve visits listed. The first record is complete as of 07 Feb 1977. Work was done by Sect Ent 5e Bn Svc. The holding unit is listed at this time as Sect Ent St-Hubert UIC 2208 which is now dormant. This holding unit info also seems to be questionable. I'm thinking the record keeping may have been a bit lax somewhere along the line? 1970 to 1987 and only 8 corrective visits can't be correct. Also, the Trade codes that performed the work are 101 and 302 for a time total of 20 hours labor. These trades no longer exist and may have been amalgamated to another trade or the responsibility given to another one all together. As for what these trades were I have no idea. The second W.O. is listed complete as of 26 July 1983. Work on this was performed by ASU Toronto maint section. 2 hours labor for a Vehicle Tech. (411). The UIC 0124 for CFB Toronto is listed as the Jeeps owner at this time. The odometer reading upon completion was 12656 miles. That is all the available info I could gather - not as much as I would like to give you, but hey, it's likely more than what you had. Good news is it's a confirmed Cable Layer! I don't know about web based photos of this variant, but I do have a document from 23 Jan 1959 from the "Army Development Establishment" in Ottawa that has "Restricted" prominately displayed at the top and bottom. It is called Equipment Characteristics Sheet For Truck, Utility, 1/4 Ton, 4x4, M38A1CDN Cable Laying Kit. I am pretty certain the 50+ year old info is not going to mean, that should I post it here, a dark colored SUV will be in my driveway shortly after, but....I am still hesitant due to my profession. Just a bit of info.
Rob L and I spoke about doing it a while back, but we need to look at pulling all of this info off of the DND Server now. Reason being, new vehicles are starting to arrive now with the 06*** range of CFRs, nearing 07***. My understanding of that program is that once the CFR number is re-issued, it overwrites the old info on the Database. I know its a huge task, but if we could break it up into ranges of numbers to share the load, it might be doable. If someone already has all of this data, please advise. Scotty

Here are some more scanned pictures for reference of the cable laying kit's mounted on the M-38CDN and M-38A1CDN, with the general stowage diagram for each.
That idea of saving the info on the DND database would be great, as I have been downloading (when time permits) all of the CFR's for different SMP type vehicles I had a personnel interest in. It is very time consuming to go to each CFR and then copy each piece of info for that single vehicle. I only began going to that length when someone had a request for something in particular. It is best when provided with a CFR as you can just type it in on the main screen and bring up that particular vehicle. It gets much longer when all you have is the serial number only, as then you look at each individual vehicle to match it to a CFR that way. So far I have had mostly success, but as Scotty said - newer vehicles, SMP or not, are cancelling out say for example, all the M-38's. Actually there is one M-38 still on the database and it was a VIP Jeep with all the chrome handrails and red carpet for parades. |

Is there any info available on my 53 Jeep? The serial number is F200352 and the CFR is 5332626. That is according to a repair work order that was in the glove box. After the CFR it says B87 (EMC). Any help would be appreciated.

Its a good Body, some damage from rough handling with a Fork Lift, but not NOS. Most likely a Depot repaired MUTT, as its all primer under the Body and Frame. A NOS Body wouldn't have all the Mods done to it, as well as a Cam paint job. It also had a Data Plate on it. Sadly, I have neither the money nor space for all of that stuff. Tragic to see it all rusting away in a field, while I welded my "two piece" back together. Frankly, these days, I doubt anyone could afford to drop 5 figures on what really amounts to alot of spare parts. Seller would not budge on selling off even enough to build one with the good Tub. He was pretty clear to me face to face that he did not have all the parts needed to finish one. I may seem a tad emotional about this. Truth is, I am. I'm not trying to steer anyone away, in fact i'd love to see them saved. But it would be wrong of me to not advise my peers of the details as I know them.

hi guys.could i ever kick myself.i could have purchased all that mutt parts years ago.john that owned them was afreind of my fathers.told me numerous times to come down and buy them.for years he bought surplus militaria.towards the end he went a little different after his wife left him.i talked over the phone with him and he would have sold them reasonably.i know somebody in the ottawa area got one mutt from him.eric booth asked me numerous times to go and i just kept putting it off.cant believe what the guy is asking for them now.i dont think they went for big dollars at the sale.regards jim.

I finally found the data plate for my A1. I couldn't make out the number on the frame. The delivery date is....1-71..... and the serial number is.....99863.

My friend just bought a M38A1 1952. The brass plates are all there but the paint has been changed . Also the frenders are civilian ?? I just bought a M38 1952 that sat for 40 years just 10 miles north of me I just found out about it .It is 100% complete except the front bumper has had a electric winch put on it .Has all the army markings on it .Shows 2300 miles on it .I will post a picture of it . These two jeeps are CDN models .

After doing some digging online, I found the CFR # for my 67. Guess it is registered wrong, as it should be a 68, which would coincide with the delivery date of Mar. 68. CFR is 68-08479.

I was going to wait until I actually got my M38 home, but the prior post about this info being lost from the DND server got me to thinking that I shouldn't delay.
What I've got coming is a 1967 M38A1 CDN2. From the current owner I've learned that the CFR# is 67-08251 and ECC# is 121201. Apparently this jeep's last post was with 2 MP Platoon CFB Petawawa (the siren and flasher switch markers are still in place). I'm grateful to have rec'd this much info, but if some more blanks could be filled in that would be great. I plan on doing a drivable retoration of this jeep and would like to re-create it in one of it's original roles. I know that three-colour camo with MP equipment is one option, and I suppose as-delivered semi-gloss green with white CFR & ECC markings is another. I would be very interested to know in what other capacities this truck served. Any help is greatly appreciated. |

Hello: I have a 1968 M38A1 with a S/N 97411,the body is long gone and l have not found any evidence of a CFR number anywhere. My restoration is near complete now except for minor details. Is the service history and CFR number obtainable? Is it correct that the CFR # was not stamped into the frt driver side frame rail behind bumper on the Cdn 2 and Cdn 3 jeep, but was stamped on the 53 M38A1? Any help would be greatly appreciated by all.
