 The Ford frame has diagonal welds on the frame rails whereas the good trucks had a single formed rail.  This may or may not be the answer, but I think it reflects Ford's poor self-image - call it the small man syndrome of the truck world - where it had to have at least one feature "bigger" or better than the Chevs...just my biased opionion.
