Ouch!!!

So how many of you have done this?
Work on the M3A1 White Scout Car came to a holt for a while yesterday. Didn't swear, just sucked in a big breath and said"Wouldn't that make you mad." My wife just laughed as I had just said - "this will hurt if the spanner slips."
Oh well, back to it again today and being a bit more careful.

Yes I have done that more than a few times It's usually my right thumb or fore finger, as the hammer is swung by my left hand.

I'm feeling the pain from here Rick. The nails a gonner, thats for sure.

Reminds me of a Simpsons episode when Homer trod on a nail and said "Fiddle de dee! That will require a Tetanus shot!"

Sorry to hear that.
Join the club, I lost the end of my middle finger a year ago, whilst working on an armoured relic of WW2. Nail was lost but has now grown back as good as ever, bit of a lack of feeling on the end though. odd thing was, I never felt a thing until the surgeon stitched it up

Rick..Being a mechanic for the past 50 years I have had my share of black nails and barked knuckles,from slipped wrenches(especially on those old flat head Ford pressure plate bolts,in confined spaces,and when the wrench slips the knuckles pay the price,usually on the chewed up ring gear teeth..)..
The difference in your black nail and mine was that I always burnt or drilled a relief hole in the black nail to release the blood from under the nail..
Even carefully cut a slit in my nail one time with my jack knife to relieve the pressure..
Use a tiny drill bit as a thumb drill and drill a little hole in the top of your finger nail..The pain relief is instantaneous..

yes I can vouch for that method...had a very bad swolen jaw due to an abcess...dentist said you will have to wait it out with painkillers and anti-biotics...no way got an old retired arm doctor to make a hole in the jaw with syringe...result 1 minute of the most foul tasting liquid ever imaginable..but instant pain relief...had to swallow salty water for a couple of days...but no further problems...old ways are the best..Happy Canada Day to you all cheers malcolm

Alex and Malcom, I know about that fix, but I didn't know it was that bad until it was too late to drill the hole. I bandaged it straight away to keep working and left the bandaid on for an extra day. I have used the red hot tip of a paper clip as well. The blood cools the heat as soon as you get through the nail. Your right the relief is instantaneous.

Back on the job it only hurts when I bump it now.

Just watch out for the quirt of blood from the finger nail when you use the hot paper clip method. Goes a long way...

It certainly was a significant ouch!
Doesn't every motor vehicle restoration project and even home renovation chore require some form of blood letting to appease the Gods?

We had an apprentice who heard us dicussing the puncture method for relieving pain and saving the nail. When he got around to mashing a finger he went straight for the Pedestal Drill and promptly drilled a 1.5mm hole right through nail AND finger. Made a bit more of a mess I can tell you. Of coursethis incident was never ever mentioned again.......

I can't stop laughing. the same thing happened at the Paynesville Slip yard whilst I was first aid officer there. Made quite a mess, but not as much of a mess as the apprentice who chopped his hand off at the wrist using a band saw the wrong way.
