Almost, but not quite, spot on Bill. I was told the standard size / height / roof profile is so that the trucks can be freighted through the RAIL tunnels in Switzerland. The road tunnels have clearance, but you'll find on a low bed flatcar the trucks all conform to the standard rail loading / clearance guage.
