Default Newbie M38A1

Hello from Barry's Bay, On.

I just joined this site as I now plan to " FIX UP " my old girl.

Not to new condition but to a good looking driver.

Firstly I am looking for new tires and I have no idea where to begin my search so I would really appreciate someones help.

I think they are 700x16.

Any other helpful thoughts or information would also be welcomed.

Thanks
Howard

I picked mine up from Wallace Wade at the MVPA convention this summer. The tires are modern made by Specialty tires of America. They run about $110 or so each. I did find a Cdn STA dealer, but his prices are incredibly high.

If you can find a STA dealer near the US border, you can order some and bring them through customs yourself. Or, you can wait until next summer's MVPA convention and buy them there. The convention will be held AUg 4-6 in Dayton Ohio. There you will be able to find just about anything you want or need for a M38A1.

Welcome to the gang! There are a half-dozen M38A1 owners in the Ottawa area. Although we aren't really "organized" we enjoy each other's company here and periodically at Gracie O'Malley's pub for social calls.

The US has all sorts of retailers. Our dollar is strong and Ogdensburg NY is just about the closest UPS depot to the line. We have other guys here who have parts for sale. Ask.

FWIW, I have a 67 M38A1 parts jeep if you need any major components or sheet metal. Send me a PM if you want it. There is another MLU regular who has/had a repro body for sale here recently.

I will eventually be bringing my CDN2 to Ottawa as well, when they finally realize I haven't been posted to the mother ship yet!

STA NDCC 700x16's are also available from Collector's Auto Supply in Kelowna, B.C., but they are asking $127US, plus tubes if you need them, plus shipping on the Greyhound. So probably cheaper to cross the border and get some if you have the time (although it's a bit of a hike from Barry's Bay, isn't it?). If I could find a distributor in northern Washington state, I would get them there myself!

Thanks to all of you
I called Specialty Tires and they have a dealer in Daytona where I spend the winter.
I will likely trailer my old girl down so I have something to tinker at.
Would any of you know the paint code or colour that was used on these units?

Thanks again

Paint color will depend on if you are going with the factory color or the in service color(s). The in service colors will vary depending on what time period your jeep is. The 53 dated ones usually remained a semi gloss olive, while the 67-71 time period jeeps usually ended up in a 3 color camouflage. A search on this forum will give you a lot of those details.

US$127 a piece is not out of line for any new tire. Have you had to buy snowtires lately? <Belay that. I just looked at your location.> Bought any rain tires lately?

I recieved today a gallon of the semi gloss green for my M38A1 1967, guaranteed right paint $67.00 @ gallon from Peter Debela Jeeps. I go to the border and my friendly UPS to get my US purchases. Gilles

Ha ha - indeed, I am in for a weather shock when I leave here. But on the other hand, since according to MLS I can buy a mansion with an indoor pool in Ottawa for what it costs to own a crappy 3-bedroom bungalow on Vancouver Island, I will probably care less about tire prices then!

Default Ottawa area

For those coming to the Ottawa area or already in the Ottawa area there is a group OF MVers who get together every once in a while. Correction there are several groups of MVers who get together.

There is an Iltis Group, a CMP group and a mixed lot.

If you guys wish to hook up send me an e-mail at cmpmagazine@hotmail.com and i will keep you in the loop.

One of the guys here has ordered paint from Army Jeep parts, Gillespi paint 36.00 US a gallon and it can be shipped into Canada.

Brian Asbury has paint as well as a few vendors in Canada as well.

There are vendors in Ontario who have tires, Brian Asbury, Ralph Journeay ( Niagara Military Vehicle Parts), Willys Acres. Willys Acres is the only one on line. E-mail me if you have questions and i can call you back.

You can get used tires from the US at Dobson Auto Wreckers south of Watertown on M151 rims. But these are used and have been sitting outside. Stay away from used Goodyears as they crack quicker than the other brand names, even if they look newer. I have bought some a few years ago but now with the age and time sitting outside it might be better to buy new rubber rather than used.

Thanks
Eric

Default Weapons holder ?????

I have noticed a metal bracket mounted on the floor between the front passenger seats.
I think it may be for a weapon ??
If it is, what is the type of weapon ??

Thanks to everyone on this fine site.

If it looks like it would hold a 14" long 1-3/4 inch diameter tube onto 2 rubberized clips, then that is the mount for the old C1 sub machine gun. This was a Canadianised (read cheapened and simplified) version of the British sterling SMG.
