UNIIMOG CF vehicle images- Iltis, 5/4 etc.
Hi,
I found a few interesting images of CF vehicles being shipped to UNIIMOG in 1988. The Linesman Iltis and 5/4 are really neat shots. Does anyone know if that is an MLVW towing the water trailer? i don't recognize the rims and it's not the most flattering angle. CFR's that I can read include: Iltis-88073 5/4-28409, 29285 MLVW-58501 M-100CDN (not loaded on MLU)-71256 The images are from the Defense Imagery site. http://www.defenseimagery.mil/imager...se-fire%20&t=0 |

Yes Jason it is an MLVW, please give us something a bit more challenging to identify!

I'll have to try harder next time.
So when did we change the rim design on ML's? Post 1990? |

After the failing split rims issue caused them to be changed. They also change the 105mm gun's wheels at the same time.

We also made the change from the old Bias Ply mud traction type tires (Goodyear, General, and Firestones if I recall) over to Michelin radials at the same time. |

Awesome. Thanks for the info guys.
So what happened to the old rims and tyres were they scrapped or sold off? At risk of going o/t were any other mods performed to the trucks at the time of the rim change or are they otherwise as-delivered? |

There were a number of mods done to the trucks, starting almost from day one. But when the tire problem cropped up, that was the only thing dealt with.
While it may have varied on some bases, here in Shilo we had to cut the old rims with a torch so they would not be used again, and the results thrown into scrap. As to the tires, almost all of which were serviceable, and many brand new, they were sold on the regular scrap tire contract, for about $4 (or less) each. Although the LCMMs had dictated that they could be sold as serviceable tires, the local supply decreed that they would be treated the same as all tire salvage. I made sure a good stack of the best ones went to the museum. |
