Found on the web, they are the local auction agents for government vehicle disposal http://www.rideauauctions.com/?id=2&...&highlight=498
The listing includes 5x Iltis and 2x 1/4 ton trailer, also 1 4x4 commercial pattern 1992 GMC from DND 3-5 ton? with self loading crane. |

Those trailers have seen better days. Hard to say if they were rolled, dropped, or run over.
The Iltis all appear to have been cannibalised, as one might expect from releases this late in the game. Almost surprising that they are still showing up from the DND system. |

I noticed a couple weeks ago that the Iltii that were in the motorpool at the North Bay Armoury are suddenly missing...
They have been parked in the same place for the last 2 or 3 years and seemingly never left the lot on exercise during this time. Perhaps they are off to auction in either Ottawa or Toronto as well.... |

Thats an M100!!
Where the hell did they dig that one up? Anyone going to the viewing? I may bid on it. The bin on my M416 is OK. Probably just switch it over and swap Fenders. Scotty

I have straightened worse M100s than that. Trick is to jack up the body corner(s), then replace the round tubing in the top edge to finish it all off. The mig will be your friend. |

It looks like lot V146 is a Volkswagen Iltis, not a Bombardier. Note the German tail lights, tire mount, antenna mount on the front fender and footman loops for the roof instead of the posts. Interesting that it has a Canadian grille guard, pintle hitch and three colour Canadian cam. I imagine that this is one of the few German (trials vehicles?) that appear in the CF Iltis holdings. Unfortunately the VIN in the listing looks suspicious even for a Volkswagen.

Good eye Jason. Note that it has "training aid" stenciled on the corner.
I'm not sure there was any difference on the basic spare tire carrier between the Canadian and the German versions. Ours simply had the wheel adapter for the M100 trailer added to the spare tire carrier, and the wheel turned around the other way. I recall that whenever we ordered the bolt from the manual for the spare tire, we always got one that was too short, meant for the german version. |

Clive has Scotty's info from the EDR on Ramtank and he has recorded that ECC 121901 was assigned to 4 VW Iltis and ECC 121911 was assigned to 1 VW Iltis ambulance. So it appears that this is one of the 5 German vehicles we had in the CF. It must have spent most of its life as a training aid to have survived until now.
I wonder if it would be possible to see what serial numbers were recorded in the EDR for these ECC's? It looks as though most of these Iltis have the large cargo chute rings on the bumpers. I wonder if they were last in use as training loads for cargo drops? |

It would be too easy to check the VMO history of the Iltis CFRs (other than the oddball trials model) and see what the common thread is to these vehicles.
The cargo drop theory is a possibility as it would explain the poor condition of the trailers. In some of the photos of MLVWs being auctioned out of Pet last year there was a photo of an M100 in the background of the compound. I wonder if this is the same one. |

My bets are one of these along with the Iltis Trailer came from Trenton, as they had them there for Para Drop training. They sat outside uncovered for years as they were essentially paper weights. I can pull the Data on the VW Iltis when I'm back to work.

I went down to Trenton a few months ago to look at 5 trailers that were up for auction. Sure enough they had similar bangs and bruises from being dropped out of a perfectly good plane. LOL
P.S. I didn't win any of them. ARGH.

Personally, I want the Topkick with the crane as a hauler truck.

Yes, I was thinking that the GMC looked interesting for recoveries. A bit thirsty as a daily driver and a bit pricey to insure for a few road trips a year....
As info there was a truck that looked like one of the F700 4x4 civilian pattern troop haulers in the last auction, described as being from Corrections Canada. It went for $1600, but was a couple of years older and didn't have a crane. My transport costs would be less than yours...... ![]() |

Those things are pretty cheap to insure, and with that engine and crane, you could drag pretty much anything out and bring it home.
I've been shopping around for a one or two-ton truck, preferably with a small crane, mainly for getting MVs. My plan is to pay for it by renting it out on the weekends, a 'man with a van' service. You can make decent money up here making runs down to Edmonton or Calgary to pick up large loads (Especially other vehicles, since the used car market up here sucks). |

someone (Hugo?) went to look at this batch and said they were all pretty well cannabalized and in rough (rusty) shape...a recoverable tailgate on one, a usuable hood on another. but generally pretty rusty and well picked over
Id sure like to know the history of my Iltis as I know it was an SFOR jeep and served in Bosnia (VK base pass found behind speedo and other VK-bosnia documents too), was some kind of command vehicle (niner) but had no unit markings visible. #86158

SFOR or IFOR? Stabilization Force was a fighting element (such as Canada's was) and Implementation Force was an occupying force.
The sequence of bases is fuzzy, but Velika Kladusa / Coralici / Bihac / Zgon / Bosanski Petrovac / Drvar / (some little shithole further west towards the Croat border ...) / Tomaslavgrad / Glamoc etc. If yours has a VK artifact, it is more likely an IFOR vehicle. Yes there were equipment rotations, but I believe almost everything stayed in place with a new stencil. Getting back to the original origins, I would concur that these trailers and Iltises are ex Para school vehicles. They look very beat up, and would have finally outlived their usefulness as training aids.

The GMC 4 X 4 (conversion by Marmon Harrington) with low profile IMT crane went for $31,000 and will likely get torn apart and used as a working truck.
The two CF Case font end loaders fitted with pallet forks with side shift I lost track of. One was a proven runner. The Ilitis and trailer all had "CABC TRAINING AIDE" marked on them. All Ilitis sold to one person. Trailers to two separate individuals. R |
