Default Ohhhhh.......

....you are good! I knew you'd have the answer.

In my friends 53 he has the 24 volt 3 prong flasher clipped to the column just beside the dash. Never dawned on me it was 3 prong. And I have 3 spare ones.

The lamp is grounded inside the control housing. All grounding that wire would do is make a complete loop from ground to lamp to ground.

I thought it might have been an "earth return system", but I remember now that that system requires two separate dash indicating lights.

Here is a wiring diagram I borrowed from the net which gives all the info on the signal stat 800 switch. Credit to the CJ3B website.
