I have mixed feelings on this.
I would tend to keep quiet if I were interested, until the bids go above what I'm willing to spend, then tell others so they can bid if they want to spend more than I am willing to go. This might help someone to find something they would have otherwise have missed. It might also mean that a big spender knocks someone else out of the bidding. I don't think there is a "right" answer to this one.
