I cleaned mine with Brasso, but I take it yours is made of something other than brass. Have seen some presented nicely, painted same color as truck. Preparation for that would depend on what metal it is made from. A good quality etch & primer should do, with prior removal of any corrosion & light sanding. Wet sanding best if not a ferous metal. I use nothing more course than 400 grit. Mind you, I also get in strife for doing the sanding in shower! Makes easy clean-up
