Conquest of Western Europe

I have now heard this story, from two sources, regarding the re-unification of Germany. I was told that when the West German military took over the former East German facilities, large quantities of detailed maps of western Europe were found, as well as medals that had been struck for reaching the English Channel. Has anyone else heard these stories or can anyone point me to where it can be substantiated.
If this is true, it would certainly point to the seriousness of the Warsaw Pact (Soviet Union) to bring the rest of Europe under it's influence.
