Perry,

Don't know anything about the medals (sounds to me like someone has embellished the map story) but the discovery of the maps does not necessarily indicate anything sinister.

All NATO armies in Europe would also have had tons of maps of the opposing team territory as well. If a war broke out, for whatever reason - and let's not forget the west was just as capable of starting the show (Kennedy's brinkmanship over Cuba missiles for example)- the most essential basic ready supplies would have been maps.

When I did an exchange Army course in England in 1970 it was common doctrine to discuss how many days it would take the Russians to reach the Channel. There was absolutely no question of stopping them short of nuclear war!
