These mirrors sound like British Army ones as used from prewar up until the 70/80's and last seen on Ferrets, they would be painted Deep Bronze Green gloss. Seem to remember they were called the 1928 Pattern. Several makers and styles, the ones with the 4 screws round the edge are I think Raydot or Desmo. For a good number of years classic parts dealers have been selling these, either painted or chromed, same with Butler sidelamps. I have used these on my QL for 14 years and find them ok, set vertically, you can see from the tyre to the top of the canopy.
