Speaking of night time operations reminds me of a story told to me by a fellow that had taken part in a night exercise on Puckapunyal with U/Cs and towed ordnance many years before. It was very dark and the carrier crew were sitting up high for maximum visibility and still couldn't see anything. The driver thought it best to stop as he sensed there was something in front of them and as he did so he heard the fellow beside him exhale. What had happened was the flash cone on the muzzle of a gun had pinned the guy to the bulkhead behind him like a big cookie cutter. By pure chance they had just stopped before any harm was done.
