In the Canadian Forces, we had a similar ficticious animal which manifested itself as the "snow snake", found mostly where one found yellow snow. This beastie could terrify a recruit since, as they were told, the animal only struck whilst one piddled in the snow.

Yeah, those snowsnakes were usually found near smoking trees/bushes.
