That carrier has a big (6 digit?) number considering it is a very early MkI* U.C.

was thinking,could it be that the two welded strips to form a rebate for the cover a field modification is?
without the two strips it is possible that a bullet lift off the plate and make some damage inside the hull.maybee that,s why they weld the strips beside the cover. roy
