Hi Alastair, in the past I have water jet cut out these seals out of rubber( 10mm thick ) that is resistant to oil. They actually do bugger all in the scheme of things , other than the barrier for the greese coming out of the shaft, the special lips Lyn talks about is an example of good British engineering in wartime production.

That's what I was going to do Andrew, I figured that so long as the faces seal nothing can get in or out of the interface with the bushes.
