5/4 tarp on Suburban 4x4
I might be mistaken, but I seem to remember seeing the Division Commander's Suburban tooling around Kingston (or Wainwright?) sporting a roof rack. The grill was about the heighth of the normal 5/4 cage. The concept was evident that the Man could hide in plain sight with his rover draped in a vinyl tarp that when up let him use the doors and windows, but with the tarp down, look like an ordinary truck at a distance. No pictures.

How times have changed. That a divisional commander (or any soldier for that matter) should be in front line battle with a softskin vehicle is abhorrent. In it's defense though, the 5/4 ton chevs usually sported so many layers of bondo, especially on the cargo boxes, that they would likely stop small arms fire.

I own a M1009 U.S. Blazer but I'm changing the front to reflect the 1976 year in Canadian forces, As I know the Canadian camo have BIG black and 2 tone of khaky and the US have SMALL spot of black-brown, khaky, (NATO)

It crossed my mind that this bin may be from a line truck or similar - anyone recognize it?

Between the CMP rifle bracket, the use of rivets, and the type of strap and footman loops, I would suggest that box is perhaps a bit earlier than the 5/4 ton. No idea what it is from though.

Here is what I found in my book for the 5/4 ton cam pattern. It is not the usual drawings found for the Cdn cam patterns, so may have been a provisional. I do not believe it is any different than the pattern you would find on the older 3/4 ton trucks.
The patterns for all the vehicles could be found in the manual of cam and concealment (CFP317 or 318 or something like that) from the 70s and 80s. |
