Bolt the glacis plate back on along with the shard you have, that will graft back in a sinch ! I had tondo something similar with mine all be it the material came from a different part of my carrier.

Radek photograph the decks (the bits the heads bolt
Down onto, and also the sump rail from underneath )

It will help ID the engines

At a glance in would say you had the 1939 - 42 ford mercury 85hp unit

Do you have any close ups of the bearing shells ? Also in the water jacket outlets in the centre openings the block is sometimes embossed with the model or year.

This link will help you

Cheers

Similar style to yours Richie with the core plugs in the sump mating face, it has the later two bolt distributor which if original to the block makes it 1942, earliest...? My 1941 85HP Detroit unit had no engine number at all stamped on it. If the bores are 3 1/6" then its an 85HP unit. If the main caps are missing your are a little buggered, but I am sure someone has a cracked block that they could be taken from and then get then cut down and line bored.
