I was looking for something in the shed and found these items I want to know what they are and where do they fit into the Military scene.

The 5140-99.... stock number is for the pouch itself. The 5821-99-943-1512 is for a "tool kit, electrical equipment". The stock class itself (5821) is for " 5821 - Radio and Television Communication Equipment, Airborne"
Afraid I can't narrow it down any further. The kit is not applicable to North American usage as near as I can see. |

Can't speak for Andrew but yes, the 99 does indicate UK. Beyond that, I know nothing of any use.

The NATO stock number country code is correctly described as the code which identifies the country assigning the NATO item identification code or NAMSA management control number. The numbers in Code sequence as at October 1996 were (and still are):
00 United States 01 United States 09 NAMSA (used only for NAMSA Management Control Numbers) 11 NATO 12 Germany 13 Belgium 14 France 15 Italy 17 Netherlands 20 Canada 22 Denmark 23 Greece 24 Iceland 25 Norway 26 Portugal 27 Turkey 28 Luxembourg 33 Spain 99 United Kingdom In simple terms, it is the country code assigned to an object that identifies the country of origin/manufacture. Australia's Defence Stock Number (DSN) code is 66, formerly referred to as the NSN (NATO Stock Number). Australia is not a formal member of NATO. Canada was actually country code 21. We exhausted our available numbers around 2002/2003 and started using 20 after that time.
A good point to note is the US code of 00 and 01. The US used up all their 00 numbers by 1974, at which time they started using 01 for the country code. You can kind of date the NSN by looking at that break. They are now up to the 01-600- range of numbers, so with another war or two, and the new NSNs for new equipment, will use those 01 numbers up eventually, after which I believe they will be using 04. |

Thanks, Rob, I'll add that info to my list. Canada is show on the 1996 NATO document as 20, rather than 21 (which is vacant in that document), so maybe the other way around, ie used 20 first, then 21 once the '20' series was exhausted?

Nope, I can absolutely unequivocally guarantee is was 21 from the implementation of NSNs until approx 2002/2003. Then we went to 20 cause 22 was already taken.
Off the top of my head, the Kent Moore double flaring tool was a 5120-21-111-3075 stock number. Very early number, with a 21 country identifier. Many small arms (like the FNs and Enfields)and their parts are in the 1005-21-103 range as well, again stuff from the 50s. |

So I wonder why the 1996 NATO doc has it listed as 20, and no entry for 21: printer error? Curious!

This is really interesting, I originally was just wanting to id the two items. Now we have a great listing of NATO numbers etc.

Out of curiosity I checked Cencat on this item and it is listed as
Maintenance Kit, Electronic Equipment Misc Comms Equipment Listed on Cencat in Apr 1991 Primary users are: Brazil Singapore Italy Denmark Still learning to use/search on Cencat, so no more info at hand
