Jack, just an educated guess but a 1969 vintage MV would have non directional tires and canvas tarpaulin. Not sure when vinyl came into play but I believe it was in the early 1980s.
I think plastic cans were around the same time.
Not sure dimensionally but some M101 3/4 ton trailers like my Maniac built one used 1'' x 1'' square aluminum bows. For your truck they may need to be made up or possibly modify some of these type to work.
