Not so unusual.

This is an image of Lt. JG G. Bush about to be rescued by submarine.

Default rescue

When I was at High school, the school principle or headmaster, Frank Farmer , was a WW2 veteran . Monday morning at school assembly , he would sometimes say to us brainless brats " I've seen things you would not believe "

Anyway, years later I found a book in the op shop on the hell ships and the sinking of them and reading the book , I learn't that he was a POW and he was being shipped to Japan on a hell ship after working on the Thai-Burma railway . The ship was torpedoed by a US submarine and he spent days floating around in the South China sea before being rescued by another US submarine , he then made his way back to Aust.

He was one of the few 8th Div. guys who made it home before the war ended .

I can still see his ruddy red face and snowy white hair .

PS did a search and found this ..the power of the web is amazing

Default USS Pampanito

Hi David, Dianaa and Mike

Thanks for the extra stories and I am sure there are heaps more out there of WW2 rescues at sea. Mike,It is interesting you mentioned the Frank Farmer story and his rescue by the USS Pampanito. I remember about 10 years ago I visited San Francisco and the USS Pampanito was tied to the docks, she was open to the public so I had the opportunity to go through the submarine, I learned that the sub was being used in movies including "Down Periscope" starring Kelsey Gramer.

Cheers

Tony
